Which answer correctly identifies the vehicles that are allowed to drive?
Answer options
Explanation
Only the passenger car driver.
The controller's arms are lowered, and this signal has exactly the same meaning as "arms extended sideways": from his left and right sides, going straight and turning right are free, and from his chest side and from behind his back, movement is prohibited for every vehicle.
In the picture the controller is standing in profile. The motorcycle comes from his chest side and the bus from behind his back, so both must stay put. The yellow lorry and the red passenger car arrive from his two sides and are in principle permitted — but only to go straight and turn right. The lorry has switched on its left indicator and its body has also turned towards the turn; a left turn is not permitted from any side under this signal, so the lorry stays stopped too. The only vehicle whose position and direction of movement are both correct is the red passenger car.
The trap of this question is the lorry: the candidate sees the lorry coming from the controller's side and immediately assumes it is permitted, without looking at its left indicator. Get into the habit of testing every vehicle with two questions: which face of the controller's body does it come from, and which direction does it want to go? If either answer fails, that vehicle must stop. The safety reason is the same: a left turn cuts across the oncoming flow and the side flows, and by limiting the sides to "straight and right" the controller's signal has eliminated this dangerous intersection of paths.
• The motorcycle comes from the controller's chest side, and from that side, with arms lowered, no movement is permitted in any direction. • The lorry comes from the controller's side, and that is what makes it tempting, but its left indicator is on and a left turn is not permitted from any side under this signal. • The bus comes from behind the controller's back; movement from behind the controller's back is always prohibited, in all directions. • The passenger car is right but adding the lorry is wrong; that same left indicator of the lorry defeats this option.
