In this situation, in which direction can the driver continue driving?
Answer options
Explanation
Only straight ahead.
You must read two sources of information together. First the traffic controller: his right arm is forward and you see him from his left side, so as far as his signal goes, movement in all directions is free for you. Second the blue sign on the right with an arrow pointing left: this sign shows that the road reaching you from the right is one-way and its flow moves to the left, that is, outwards and towards your road. Entering such a road by turning right would be movement against the permitted direction and remains prohibited. On the left there is no road to turn into either; the edge of the carriageway, railings and greenery continue. The result: the only remaining route is straight ahead.
The key rule is that a controller's signal takes precedence over the light and the priority signs, but it does not remove the prohibitions arising from a road being one-way. Permission to move is not the same as "there being a road to go into".
The safety reason is obvious too: entering a one-way road against the flow means a head-on collision with a car that is not expecting to see you at all. The common exam trap is that as soon as you see the controller has permitted movement, you ignore the signs.
• "Straight and right" is precisely the mistake the one-way sign closes off; entering that road from this junction is movement against the permitted direction. • "Straight and left" proposes a direction for which there is no road at all; on the left there is only the edge of the carriageway and greenery. • "All" has both of the above faults at once and assumes the controller's signal also cancels the signs' prohibitions.
